Winter Storms
So far the winter in Southern California has been relatively mild, and we haven’t had much precipitation. It is now upon us. I just read it may be a record breaking winter storm. As much as we need the rain and snow in our region, we know how things get so messy when bad weather hits our sunny SoCal. Up where I am in the mountains, we’ve had about 9 inches of snow fall earlier in the week, and we’re now expecting some heavy snow in the coming few days. The Interstate 5 was closed in both direction, and the main road coming into our community was closed for hours as things can get really messy quickly once the road gets icy.
It is a good time to stay home, make fire in the fireplace, make some hearty soup and read some books. While I sure hope I get to do some of that, it’s more like good time to catch up on all the work that has been backed up while I was running down to the city to tend the business. As I said many times before, I am so grateful to be up here and get to watch the weather, actually more like “experience” the weather day by day even while I’m working indoor. All I need is to step out of the front door and feel the cold wind and almost get swayed. Since I’m immersing myself in the study of eco-chaplaincy, I’m reminded how I am just a tiny part of this planet and how everything — both animate and inanimate as well as human civilization and nature — is interconnected.
Even though I am feeling fairly optimistic that things are getting better with the new administration and vaccine slowly making its way to us, I’m also reminding myself about patience and resilience as I see in the nature. Things can take time but things will for sure change — better or worse, hopefully better. I know what I can do is to do my part in taking good care of this Earth in the same way or the same intention to take care of myself and my loved ones. After all how we take care of ourselves does matter to the wellbeing of the planet. Let’s be kind to each other (yes, you, me and the Earth), and stay safe, dry and warm during this winter storm!
