What Do I Want To Say…

I have been writing my weekly email for a little over 3 years now. I’m always surprised how many people tell me they read it. Honestly, it’s better if I don’t think about it. I don’t want to get too self-conscious about what I say. But today I am feeling quite self-conscious because there’s so much going on and so much at stake.

We are in the midst of 3 major crisis in this country: Health, economy and justice. Last week I reposted an Instagram post that said something to the effect of “privilege is when you don’t think it’s a problem because it doesn’t affect you.” Well, I am fully aware of the crisis and the problems we have; however, I am also of the privileges I live with. I am able to stay healthy; I am well sheltered and well fed; and most of all, I am certainly not experiencing any systematic injustice in my life.

As I attended a POC and Allies Sangha last weekend with Joanna Hardy, she and other teachers said, “Do something even if you make a mistake. It’s messy anyway.” Yup, it’s really messy, all right, but each of us can do something…something small or big or somewhere in between. InsightLA has now a page on their website, “Anti-Racism Resources.” Yesterday during the birthday celebration for our teacher, Trudy Goodman, her beloved husband, Jack Kornfield mentioned “75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice.” It’s a long list, and I haven’t gone through them all, but I’m just sharing it here in case you may be interested.

So it goes… I must say I feel inadequate in this time of grave reality that we face as a country and the world. But this, apparently, is what I had to say today.

Let’s sit together!
