Spring Has Come Regardless…

We’re almost a month into this extraordinary time in history of coronavirus pandemic. What a wild ride it has been to navigate this constantly changing world around us! Needless to say, it’s been quite a journey for me and my husband to have to move in the middle of this intense period when we could not get much help from others except for a few angels that came our way unexpectedly. Now that I’ve “settled in” my mountain house that we call our “home,” I’m blown away everyday with gratitude for this unexpected “fate” to be quarantined here.

While I do miss the ocean, I am so fond of this area where California natives, mainly the Chumash, used to thrive thousands of years ago. There’s a rich history and culture that can be accessed in these communities. The species of pines such as Ponderosa, Jeffrey and Pinion Pines coexist with Oak trees in the woods where I visit almost every day. While many old trees (like my favorite Ponderosa) were cut down during the last winter by the forest service, assuming to prevent fire, it’s only a 2-minute walk from my house to be amongst them to listen to the wind and the birds.

And the plum trees that I planted in memory of my late kitty, Riley, a few years ago by the house is now blooming. The daffodils on my front yard are also in full bloom. I get to watch then every day now, which I would have missed had I still been living in the city. Nature is thriving regardless of what’s happening in the human realm. Indeed, we hear about different cities around the world witnessing the nature coming back after the world came to pause. We also had a family of deer hanging around in the back of our house for a few hours last week, which we hadn’t seen for a long time although I don’t know if that was an effect of less human activities.

As many of our activities are moved to the online platforms, so was my Friday practice group. And we’ve had good turn out since I started the online group. I know there are so many opportunities to practice online today, but it is always a joy to practice with others. I hope you’re taking advantage of them to keep our equanimity for this tumultuous time.
