Sound of the First Rain

The rain finally came on Monday. It was really the first rain for us in the mountains as that fantastic rain storm that hit Los Angeles a little while ago barely brought a few rain drops. This one came rather quietly though much anticipated and lasted for a good part of the day. And that gentle sound of it was oh so comforting. As I looked out the windows, I was almost ecstatic to see the trees getting showered after all these months of no precipitation.

As the rain fell steadily and gently moistening our very thirsty land, the world seemed very tranquil. The quiet felt even more poignant as it was the day after our granddaughters were visiting us. My step-daughter, Marissa, brought the two little girls to spend the weekend at “Papa and Baba’s house.” For London, the 3-year old, this was her second time — not counting one time that she came to the house when she was only about 5-months old — and the first time for Kyle, who will have her very first birthday in less than two weeks. Our house was filled with toys, their “friends,” giggles, screams and little footsteps. For two days I was mesmerized by these little beings. Aside from being impressed by Marissa’s superb parenting skills, I was inspired by how both girls knew exactly how to communicate and express themselves. And what a delight to watch London run through the trails, climb the rocks and tree stumps — to be able to share my favorite place in the world with them.

So as I listened to the rain in the quiet house the next day, the sweet and fresh memories of the time we spent with them lingered in my mind and more in my heart. What a great reminder to be present in each moment and really be available for whatever comes…
