One Breath at A Time

Well, who’s still counting? It’s been over FIVE MONTHS since the pandemic shut-down and since we ended up sheltering in the mountains. A LOT has happened during this time for myself, many people I know, and for the whole world. While many of us has got somewhat used to the new norm of spending a lot of time in front of the computer to stay connected both professionally and personally, the world still seems to be quite uncertain, volatile and fragile.

In the midst of the chaos in the world, one thing I have deeply appreciated about living in this mountain house is that I get to watch the time passing by the nature itself. I can see the path of the sun, paths of the constellation move every day. I’ve watched different flowers and plants come and go. There was a day a bunch of baby quails hatched and started running around. So did the bunnies. Almost 4 weeks ago the a few cricket started chirping at night, and now we’ve been hearing this surround sound of crickets orchestra once it gets dark every night.

With each breath we take the time is going by whether we mean to or not. As I experience occasional anxiety and mild depression when I get into the worries, learning to use the breath as an anchor not only in my meditation but anytime I’m awake has been a significant help. When I’m scared or stressed, I often find myself holding my breath. As long as I can notice that, I can resume breathing, one breath at a time.

Mom will be moved to a rehab facility on Monday. I’ve actually made progress with my question about whether I can go to Japan. My passport was renewed, and I am now in contact with Consulate General of Japan about getting a visa. Meanwhile Nicola, the kitty, still seems to be holding onto her little life. As Buddha taught to reflect on aging, sickness and death, and the fact that we will lose all that’s dear to us at some point, I embrace the teaching and the practice with tender heart one breath at a time.
