Memorable

What’s not memorable about 2020!? The year is already half-way through, and it’s been nothing but memorable, hasn’t it? It was supposed to be memorable because of the Tokyo Olympic, which was scheduled to start this Friday. It was supposed to be memorable for the Presidential Election in the U.S. Yet, as it turns out, it is memorable in every little ways of our life.

We will all remember this year clearly — hopefully with some fond memories of the things we have done that we wouldn’t have otherwise — how we spent our days of sheltering in place. I will also remember my 60th birthday as many of my other friends who had this milestone birthdays.

While I have not been someone to have parties for my birthdays except for the milestones, I wanted to celebrate this one with friends and families. As I have been writing about it, it was kind of a puzzle how to plan the celebration. While I wish that many people could join me up in the mountains for that day, I also feel so blessed as I got to hike with some local friends at the sacred mountain of Mt. Pinos and had a small gathering in the park. Although I resisted the idea of having a virtual party, I ended up with a Zoom party after all and saw some more people that I wouldn’t have got to see. I couldn’t have planned a birthday like this if it weren’t for COVID!

Even though we don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and we’re required to stay on high alert, I’m grateful to be able to maintain the connection with the people I love and the world. Technology was ripe for this unimaginable turn of the world, I guess. And what an opportunity for us to live in the present moment with a sense of powerlessness and equanimity.
